The cartridge is changed approximately every 10 to 12 months, depending on the quality and quantity of water being treated. Polyphosphate crystals are ideal for fitting to filters in the washing machine or dish water supply and generally where water hardness reduction is required. Polyphosphate crystals dissolve in water and effectively coat elements such as iron, calcium, magnesium, etc. making it impossible for these elements to settle out of the water and create the well-known problems associated with hard water, such as scale formation in pumps, washing machine resistors.
